Christian Krohg

Member of the Realism movement that came to scene in Europe by the 1850´s and whose purpose was to oppose to the Romanticism, and rather trying to depict an objective reality, Christian Krohg (Norway, 1852 - 1925) was one of the most remarkable members of this artistic movement. Painter, writer and journalist, Krohg felt a personal compromise in describing and depicting the real life and events of the members of whom in those times were considered "inferior classes"of the society. He received a proper education academic formation in Art in Germany, where he received the influence of another important member of the Norwegian artistic family, Hans Gude. His interest for describing the "objective reality" led him to write a well known novel: "Albertine" in 1886, a story about the daily life of a prostitute, that in those times was considered an scandal. The Realism later evolved into Naturalism, a gender that characterized the Norwegian artistic style during the period, or course, under the leadership of Krohg, who later got in touch with the members of the Danish school of "Skagen" receiving great influence from the Ancher couple, Anna and Michael and becoming a main member of that Artistic movement whose main purpose was to describe and find inspiration in the characteristic and wonderful light that can be enjoyed in that part of Northern Jutland. It could be considered that the Skagen period represented the summit and the most mature stage in Krohg´s career. As a matter of fact, the Skagen Museum of Art is mainly focused on this extraordinary Norwegian painter and his work.

Later on his life, Christian Krohg became more and more interested in journalism, founding a journal related on Impressionism and Bohemian artisitc life "Impressionisten" and colaborating with the newspaper "Verdens Gang" until 1910. Christian Krohg was professor and director of the Norwegian Academy of Arts, where he workd until his death in 1925.

Aleksa, you are right and it make me feel so happy that you can notice that joy i try to share through these lines and images. Everytime i manage to make somebody to catch the spirit, it is like a victory for me. Hehe, sometimes i feel like that man hanging from the pole in the middle of the stormy winter. Hugs Aleksa,, and lots of joy!!
